Workshops
The education will be delivered in interactive keynote presentations, team building, and breakout rooms. The audience comprises Health care professionals such as nurses, physicians, social workers, PSWs, students, and Home and Community Care Coordinators.

Essential Pain Management (EPM) and Advance Approaches to Manage Pain (AMP)
Pain assessment, management, and evaluation are foundational skills for nurses working in any practice setting. Since these skills are often not thoroughly covered in nursing programs, the EPM course aims to equip nurses with a foundational knowledge base and abilities around pain management from a palliative care approach that can be applied to their practice. The focus of this course is on the pharmacological management of pain.
The course has two sections: Essential Pain Management (EPM) and Advanced Approaches to Manage Pain (AMP).
To receive the EPM certificate, each participant must:
- Complete the five education modules online (self-directed/autonomous learning), AND
- Attend one 90-minute, mandatory online EPM coaching session
- Dates for the EPM coaching sessions are: Tuesday January 28 and Tuesday February 11 (participants select which date to attend)
- Time: 16:15 to 17:45
Once the EPM section is completed, you will have automatic access to the online AMP Module to explore advanced pain management.
To receive the AMP certificate, each participant must:
- Complete the AMP Preparation Module (self-directed/autonomous learning), AND
- Attend the mandatory 3-hour online AMP coaching session
- Date for the AMP mandatory coaching session is Tuesday March 4
- Time: 16:15 to 19:15
The Winter 2025 EPM / AMP course will run from Tuesday January 14 to Friday March 7, 2025

All requirements must be completed within the course dates, there is NO opportunity to transfer to a future course to complete the coursework.

Fundamentals of Palliative Care
This 6-week (3-hour classes) standardized curriculum is based on A Model to Guide Hospice Palliative Care, 2002, specifically the Domains of Issues Associated with Illness and Bereavement is funded by the Central East LHIN. The “FUNDAMENTALS” course is recommended for ALL Health Care Providers and Hospice Palliative Care.
Limit 25 participants per class. First come first serve!
Tuesdays – 5 pm – 8 pm – Location: Online – Zoom
Volunteers. There is a $75.00 fee to cover the cost of your resource guide. This is non-refundable or transferable.
Topics will include:
- Introduction to Hospice Palliative Care
- Dying, Death, and Hospice Palliative Care
- Disease Management
- Physical Issues
- Psychological/Spiritual Issues
- Social/Practical Issues
- End-of-Life Care and Death Management
- Grief, Loss, and Managing Occupational Stress

“The Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care” is a prerequisite course for CAPCE (Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education – for RPNs, RNs, NPs, and other advanced care clinicians).
***Please note*** RPNs, RNs, NPs, and other advanced care clinicians wishing to take the CAPCE course are required to complete, free of charge, a two-week Enhanced Fundamentals course after the 6-week basic Fundamentals course.
Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care
This course is geared toward those who are interested in or are already supporting clients in a palliative care environment. This standardized curriculum, funded by the Central East Home and Community Care Support Services, is based on ‘A Model to Guide Hospice Palliative Care, 2002,’ with a focus on Domains of Issues Associated with Illness and Bereavement.
Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE)
**Please bring your Fundamentals Textbook for the 1st class**
An intensive 20-week course for RNs, RPNs, NPs, and health care clinicians. The course is typically offered once a year and taught in small class sizes. The Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE) program combines the ‘art’ with the ‘science’ of Hospice Palliative Care (HPC). Aligning best practice standards and the Model to Guide Hospice Palliative Care, CAPCE focuses on the development and role of the nurse as an HPC resource for the interdisciplinary team in long-term care, agencies, hospitals, and communities.
The Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE) Program combines the “art” and “science” of Hospice Palliative Care (HPC) for nurses (RPNs, RNs, NPs, and other advanced care clinicians). The program embeds best practice standards and aligns with the Model to Guide Hospice Palliative Care. CAPCE focuses on the development and role of the nurse as an HPC resource for the interdisciplinary team in long-term care homes, agencies, hospitals, and communities.
***Please note*** RPNs, RNs, NPs, and other advanced care clinicians wishing to take the CAPCE course are required to complete, free of charge, a two-week Enhanced Fundamentals course after the 6-week basic Fundamentals course.
CAPCE can be completed in a minimum of 20 weeks. Fundamentals Enhanced is provided within the first 2 weeks of the CAPCE course.
The components of the program include self-directed reading and reflection, 6 e-learning modules, 3 in-person sessions (case-based learning), 8 peer-to-peer exchanges (learning debrief), 2 practical application assignments, and 9 individual or small group coaching sessions.
CAPCE Selection Criteria: a minimum of 1-year hospice palliative care nursing experience, access to an internet-enabled computer, have knowledge of basic computer programs, and have completed the Fundamentals Core and Enhanced Hospice Palliative Care Programs.

Advanced Practice Palliative Skills (APPS)
A more in-depth look at palliative care provision for PSWs and health care aides. Following active participation in the APPS course, learners will have an enhanced understanding and respect for the role of PSWs/Health Care Aides in providing a palliative approach.
