Black Health Initiative
About BHI
The Black Health Initiative (BHI) at the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities was developed in response to the need for more culturally relevant, accessible, and responsive health supports for Black communities in Scarborough. The overarching name of the initiative is TTIES — Transformative, Trauma-Informed, Embracive, and Supportive — which guides the vision, approach, and delivery of all programs and services.
Overview of TTIES Approach
TTIES reflects a commitment to creating spaces that prioritize growth and healing, recognize the impact of trauma, embrace diverse identities and lived experiences, and foster meaningful, ongoing support, composed of two programs.
- Transformative – Prioritizing growth, healing, and systemic change.
- Trauma-Informed – Grounded in understanding the impact of trauma and fostering environments of safety, trust, and empowerment.
- Embracive – Deep inclusivity and acceptance of all identities, stories, and cultural backgrounds.
- Supportive – Centering compassion, relationships, and ongoing care in all practices.
