About this Program

Volunteers have always played a significant role in our organization and are an important part of the SCHC family. We provide an opportunity for people to bring about real change within their communities.

We encourage a donation of time and talents to address local challenges, and unite communities by sharing our capacity to care for one another. The spirit of caring is clearly evident in our many volunteers at SCHC. We appreciate everyone who wants to share their time with us and encourage you to join us!

Volunteering Opportunities

Interested in becoming a volunteer for SCHC?

We currently have an urgent need for Meals-on-Wheels Drivers (must drive your own vehicle) and Food Bank volunteers. Since many of our programs depend on volunteers, we need reliable and dedicated volunteers who can contribute their time during weekdays: Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. Meals on Wheels shifts are once a week from approx. 11:30am to 1:30pm – just 2 hours of your time once a week!

Please note: We have very little evening or weekend opportunities.

*Please note that during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have NO volunteer roles for High School Students.

How Do I Apply?

Step 1:

Explore the SCHC website and get familiar with our various programs.

Step 2:

Read the volunteer roles listed on this page and decide on one or two that interest you the most.

*NEW* Step 3:

Attend a Volunteer Information Session. You will learn about SCHC, what’s involved in becoming a volunteer with us and the various volunteer roles. This general info session provides an opportunity to determine if SCHC is a good fit for your volunteer goals. If you have any questions, please bring them to the info. session.

Next Volunteer Info Session is: Wed. October 19, 2022 from 5:00-6:30pm

Please send an email to: volunteerprogram@schcontario.ca including your name and phone number if you are able to attend the next virtual session. It will be over ZOOM and you will need a phone or computer or tablet with a camera and microphone to participate.

Note: If you want to volunteer in Hospice Palliative, Bereavement Support or Friendly Visiting, there’s a separate Volunteer info session focused on ONLY these 3 programs. The next session is Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 6:00 – 7:00PM
Please email: hpcvolcoordinator@schcontario.ca if you want to attend this session or ask about upcoming sessions.

Step 4:

After you have attended a volunteer info session, you will be provided a link to complete an online application and some additional required forms by: volunteerprogram@SCHContario.ca. The forms are fillable PDF and can be done online. You can email them or also drop them off at our head office location: 629 Markham Rd. Unit 2, lower level (facing Greenholm Circuit).

Step 5:

If you have a current, CLEAR Vulnerable Sector police check, please provide a copy. If you don’t, we will provide the form and explain the process to obtain one. You will not be allowed to volunteer at SCHC without one. There is a small cost to obtain this and you are required to pay. If this is a barrier to volunteering, please contact us at: volunteerprogram@SCHContario.ca.

Head office location, 629 Markham Rd. at Lawrence Ave., Unit #2, North-east corner, behind Shoppers Drug Mart, lower level, facing Greenholm Circuit. We appreciate your future volunteer time – Thank you.

Volunteer Role Descriptions

Please note we require all volunteers to:

  • Commit to volunteer for a minimum of 6 months, and longer for some programs
  • Contribute minimum 3 to 4 hours weekly, depending on the volunteer role. Meals on Wheels is a 2 hour shift once a week.
  • Have a good working knowledge of English
  • Be at least 18 years old *Note: High School students – please connect with Volunteer Toronto or other organizations
  • Provide or commit to obtain a CLEAR Vulnerable Sector police check (criminal background check – we supply form but not payment)

  • Be prepared to devote time to online training mandatory for all volunteers and to provide 2 personal references.

To volunteer in the Hospice, Friendly Visiting and Bereavement programs, we prefer a 1 year commitment. These programs also require additional in-person and online training. The majority of our volunteer positions require availability of 3 to 4 hours between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Occasional volunteers may be needed for evening or weekend special events.

Corporate Team Volunteer Opportunities

SCHC offers opportunities for corporate teams to volunteer. These may include helping at the Food Bank, special projects like painting, organizing special events, putting together Cold Weather Care Kits, holding a food drive or fund raising for urgently needed services or items for the Scarborough community. We have an ongoing urgent need for Meals on Wheels Corporate Teams. To learn more about this exciting opportunity, CLICK HERE.
Due to COVID-19 certain team positions are not available at this time.
