Volunteer
About this Program
Volunteers have always played a significant role in our organization and are an important part of the SCHC family. We provide an opportunity for people to bring about real change within their communities.
We encourage a donation of time and talents to address local challenges, and unite communities by sharing our capacity to care for one another. The spirit of caring is clearly evident in our many volunteers at SCHC. We appreciate everyone who wants to share their time with us and encourage you to join us!

Volunteering Opportunities
Are you interested in volunteering for SCHC? Thank you for considering us!
We currently need Hospice Home Visiting, Friendly Visiting, and Bereavement Volunteers. Since many of our programs depend on volunteers, we need reliable and dedicated volunteers who can contribute their time during weekdays, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Meals on Wheels shifts are once a week from approximately 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.—just two hours of your time once a week! You must drive your car for Meals on Wheels.
Please note: We have very few evening or weekend opportunities.
**Note: Are you a high school student looking for volunteer hours?
Please connect with us at volunteerprogram@schcontario.ca
How Do I Apply?
Step 1:
Explore the SCHC website and get familiar with our various programs.
Step 2:
Read the volunteer roles listed on this page and decide on one or two that interest you the most.
*NOTE* Step 3:
Attend a Volunteer Information Session. You will learn about SCHC, what’s involved in becoming a volunteer with us, and the various volunteer roles. This general information session provides an opportunity to determine if SCHC is a good fit for your volunteer goals. If you have any questions, please bring them to the information session.
The next Volunteer Info Session is not presently scheduled. Once the date is decided, this page will be updated. Thank you for your patience.
Please send an email to volunteerprogram@schcontario.ca, including your name and phone number, if you can attend the next virtual session. It will be over Zoom, and you will need a phone, computer, or tablet with a camera and microphone to participate.
Note: If you want to volunteer in Hospice Palliative, Bereavement Support, or Friendly Visiting, there’s a separate Volunteer Coordinator focused on ONLY these 3 programs.
Please email hpcvolcoordinator@schcontario.ca for information about volunteering in these areas. There is an urgent need for these three programs, so please consider them. There is extra training involved, and you become certified as a Hospice Bereavement Care Support Volunteer.
Step 4:
After you have attended a volunteer info session, volunteerprogram@SCHContario.ca will send you a link to complete an online application and some additional required forms. The forms are fillable PDFs that can be completed online. You can also email them or drop them off at our head office.
Step 5:
If you have a current CLEAR Vulnerable Sector Police Check (obtained in the last 12 months), please provide a copy. If you don’t, we provide the link or form and explain how to obtain one. You will not be allowed to volunteer at SCHC without one. There is a cost to receive this, and you are required to pay. If this is a barrier to volunteering, don’t hesitate to contact us at volunteerprogram@SCHContario.ca.
The head office is located at 629 Markham Rd. at Lawrence Ave., Unit #2, northeast corner, behind Shoppers Drug Mart, lower level, facing Greenholm Circuit.
Volunteer Role Descriptions – these are the ONLY roles we offer:
Please note we require all volunteers to:
- Commit to volunteer for a minimum of 6 months and longer for some programs
- Depending on the volunteer role, contribute at least 3 to 4 hours weekly. Meals on Wheels is a 2-hour shift once a week.
- Have a good knowledge of English – must be able to speak clearly, read and write.
- Must be 19 years old *Note: High School students – please connect with our Youth team at 416-642-9445 ext. 4473, or Volunteer Toronto at 416-961-6888 ext. 232
- Provide or commit to obtaining a CLEAR Vulnerable Sector police check (criminal background check). We supply instructions for obtaining this, but not the payment.
- Understand that volunteer positions are unpaid. Volunteering is the philanthropic activity of donating your time to a cause you wish to support.
- Be prepared to devote time to online training mandatory for all volunteers and to provide two personal references.
We prefer a one-year commitment to volunteer in the Hospice, Friendly Visiting, and Bereavement programs. These programs also require additional in-person and online training. The majority of our volunteer positions require 3 to 4 hours of availability between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional volunteers may be needed for special evening or weekend events.
Corporate Team Volunteer Opportunities
SCHC offers opportunities for corporate teams to volunteer. These may include helping at the Food Bank, doing special projects like painting, organizing special events, putting together Harm Reduction Kits or Cold Weather Care Kits, holding a food drive, or raising funds for urgently needed services or items for the Scarborough community. We also have an ongoing urgent need for Meals on Wheels Corporate Teams. To learn more about this exciting opportunity, please contact: volunteerprogram@schcontario.ca
