Program: Health & Wellness – Children & Youth
Introduction

Liyana, 14 years old, is a genuine, sweet, and earnest. She initially struggled with shyness but has grown into a leader within her group. The Hub is like a second family to her, and her experience there has greatly influenced her empathy for others. She loves to cook and can showcase her cooking skills on camera. The Women’s Walk event inspired her, where she met women of all ages and backgrounds.
Liyana has been involved in SCHC programs since she was a child and is now a youth leader in the community!
Liyana & Tiwa’s Story
Current Connections and Contributions

I was told by a friend a year ago about the SCHC’s Youth programs and ever since I have joined, I am here every day. I love having group discussions and planning with everyone. We get to organize so many things for the community, and it’s a very rewarding process.
Some of the programs I am involved in are CHEF, which is a healthy cooking class where the youth get to learn new recipes and cook together, Summer Camps, and the GLTR, which is a youth-led girls discussion group.

The people at the Hub are really caring and the type you can turn to when in need. I am more excited to come to the Hub every day because each day is different from the last, and I learn so much from everyone around me. There are several youth programs in Scarborough, but none are as fun and unique as the Hub.
A memory I distinctly remember was when we stayed late in the kitchen to prep for Hubfest. Although it’s an extremely awesome time, it’s very tiring work. I think what made this memory special was that I was with my friends, and even though we were tired, we pulled through. I also really loved the trips we went on during the summer.
To all the Donors, Thank you so much for everything. Your contributions have helped immensely with programs and events and, more importantly, giving people a sense of home and comfort. The Hub will never forget this amazing opportunity we have had, and we hope to see you at future events.
Introduction

My name is Tiwa and I have been involved as a youth leader at The Hub for five years. When I initially started attending The Youth Space for the various of programs, like the Mind and Youth Spirit Leadership I was an introvert and usually sat by myself.
I have four siblings at home which tends to make the house a bit noisy, so when I have to study and catch up with my work, I like to come to The Hub. It is a much quieter spot for me to focus, and the staff also ensures to help me stay on track like helping me with my University applications. My grades were not so good at first but when I started coming here, they bumped up to the mid 80’s. Even my mom encourages me to come and she loves that I come to The Hub. The staff also feeds me well, so that is a great bonus.

I love it here. It feels great and I do not feel alone anymore. I have found the right support and a safe environment at the community youth space, with adult allies who helped me avoid toxic influences in the community.
