Walking with Respect: Take Back the Night – Female Safety Walk

June 18, 2025

Written By Rashme Nandakumar, Youth Network Ambassador

This year, The Hub Mid Scarborough held its first-ever Take Back the Night – Female Safety Walk, a deeply moving and meaningful community event that reflected our organization’s principle of respect — for lived experiences, personal safety, cultural identity, and the collective strength of women and girls.

This event brought together a vibrant group of female-identifying individuals in solidarity, reclaiming public spaces after dark as sites of safety, visibility, and connection. Walking together through the neighbourhood, participants not only made a physical statement against gender-based violence but also sent a powerful message: everyone deserves to feel safe and always respected in their community, at all times and in all spaces.

Along the route, stories were shared, sparklers were lit, songs were sung, and voices were lifted in joy and resistance. The walk culminated in a nearby park, where attendees gathered in a circle of care — engaging in heartfelt conversation, reflection, and community building. The night featured performances, snacks, and an atmosphere of mutual support and compassion.

Respect was not just the theme of the evening — it was embedded in every detail. Respect for one another’s safety, stories, cultural expression, and space created an environment where participants felt seen, heard, and valued.

This walk was more than an event — it was a movement. We are proud to stand with community members in resisting gender-based violence and look forward to continuing this important work with humility, care, and respect at the centre.
