Hanna’s life story is one of resilience, adaptation, and discovering a new sense of purpose in a foreign land. As a pediatrician with his own clinic in Syria, Hanna’s life took a drastic turn in 2015 when a missile landed near his home, forcing him to prioritize the safety of his family above all else. In 2016, he made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada, seeking refuge and a fresh start.

Upon arriving in Canada, Hanna faced the harsh reality of extreme weather conditions and the daunting challenge of finding suitable accommodation for his family. Despite these initial hurdles, Hanna embarked on a journey of integration, enrolling in language courses to improve his English skills and gradually immersing himself in the local community. He took on part-time roles at the Agincourt Community Service Association and later as a Research Assistant at Ryerson University, demonstrating his resilience and determination to rebuild his life in his new home.

Driven by his unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth, Hanna pursued further education in Autism and Behavioral Science, followed by social services. His perseverance paid off when he secured a position as a Community Health Ambassador at the Agincourt Community Service Association, where he made significant contributions until the project concluded in 2023.

In October 2023, Hanna embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC) as part of the VAROS team. This transition marked a significant milestone for Hanna, providing him with a supportive work environment and ample opportunities for personal and professional development. Quickly integrating into the SCHC team, Hanna was drawn to the collaborative atmosphere and the genuine care exhibited by his colleagues.

Reflecting on his journey, Hanna expresses profound gratitude for his safety and stability in Canada, a stark contrast to the uncertainties he faced in his homeland. Despite the challenges of rebuilding his career and adjusting to a new culture, Hanna finds deep fulfillment in his work at SCHC, where he utilizes his medical expertise to serve the community and make a positive impact.

Hanna’s story exemplifies the resilience of immigrants and the transformative power of finding purpose and belonging in a new home. Through his unwavering determination and commitment to serving others, Hanna continues to make a meaningful contribution to his community while embracing Canada’s opportunities for growth and fulfillment.
